Project Brief: This assignment requires students to build off past projects to develop a functional calendar system. Use this project to develop your 3-dimensional skills, especially if you are enrolled in courses that utilize various materials and machinery. This project is open for creative interpretation of how the viewer holds and interacts with it.

Class: Images in Communication

Ideation

Starting off, I sketched out a bunch of different ideas of what type of calendar I could do, I wasn’t feeling very confident about a lot of them, the only two that I thought were solid were the top two ones. I then realized the one on the top left would be very wasteful since it uses a lot of plastic for each model of the month and could be bad for the environment. In the end, the top right calendar ended up being my go-to option.

I expanded on the idea of a small dispenser that could dispense a calendar that could be used for everyday carry. I sketched out the inside to show how the mechanism would work as well as the overall form of the dispenser. It would work by twisting the wheel at the bottom which would either dispense or retract the calendar depending on which way you twist it.

First Model and Printing

The first model I created ended up being the one I stuck with throughout the project, I did it very quickly since the shapes are pretty simple and the tools in Rhino 3D are very effective in altering 3D shapes. The final step was to scale it, I ended up making it almost three inches which could add to its versatility and practicality.

I wanted the calendar to have a futuristic feel so I kept it minimal with the colors and used simple shapes to represent the moon phases. I also used sleek fonts for the text.
